The Culture Edits is a digital publication amplifying Black stories, voices, and experiences from Austin, Texas, and across the globe. We cover culture, community, and connection through thoughtful journalism, creative storytelling, and lived experience.
We’re always looking for writers, journalists, creatives, and cultural observers who are passionate about telling meaningful stories that matter.
What We Cover
We accept pitches in the following categories:
- News – Local Austin stories, national or global news impacting Black communities
- Culture – Arts, music, fashion, film, literature, and creative movements
- Entertainment – Music, TV, film, celebrity, and pop culture
- Sports – Athletes, teams, youth sports, fitness and wellness, and sports culture
- Travel – Black-centered travel, local guides, global experiences
- Voices – Personal essays, commentary, and opinion pieces
Who Can Pitch
- Freelance writers
- Journalists (emerging or established)
- Students and early career writers
- Creatives, photographers, and cultural critics
- Community members with a strong story to tell
You do not need to be based in Austin, but Austin-based voices are strongly encouraged.
Pitch Guidelines
Please send pitches that include:
- Proposed headline
- Short summary (2-3 paragraphs)
- Why this story matters now
- Category it fits under
- Your bio (2-3 sentences)
- Links to 1-3 writing samples (published or personal blog)
Word count ranges:
- Short features: 600-800
- Standard Features: 800-1,200 words
- Essays: 800-1,500 words
Compensation
At launch, The Culture Edits operates with a mix of paid and unpaid contributions depending on story type and budget availability. Payment details will always be discussed before acceptance. Writers are also allowed to include any personal affiliate links they may have.
Our goal is to fairly compensate contributors as the publication grows.
